My First Time Witnessing Communion
When I was younger growing up in church, the congregation would take communion. I didn’t know what it was, all I knew was that there was a saltine looking cracker and red juice involved. As I looked around people would be reduced to tears and I thought there was something deeply spiritually taking place that would allow everyone to react the same way.
Then I took my first communion. I opened up the bread and the pastor recited the scripture that says,
"Jesus took the bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body."
Matthew 26:26
There was silence as we all took a bite from the body of Christ. Then the pastor raised the grape juice saying,
"Then he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Matthew 26:27-28
We drank and I began to weep. I realized that we weren’t just eating crackers and sipping grape juice. We were remembering the sacrifice that Jesus made. He was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities! His blood was painfully shed to seal the covenant with God to FORGIVE our sins.
Isaiah 53:5 says,
"He was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed."
Because of Jesus we can be made whole and we can be healed!
The phrases, the roman soldiers, pilot, and the people thought that killing this man would bind the power and the will of God. They thought that they would return to life the way it was before Jesus came. Manipulating the people, up-selling animals to be offered to God to atone for their sins, and walking around stiff necked and self-righteous. THIS IS WHY JESUS CAME TO PUT AN END TO ALL OF THIS CRAP. They thought they had WON!
BUT GOD!!!!! This was ALL a part of the plan! The roman soldiers, the jealousy of the pharisees, and Judas betraying Him. It was all a set up.
They were just apart of the story. God used them to position Jesus to carry out the plan He had in mind to reconcile us back to the Father all they way back to the fall in the garden.
"And I will put enmity between thee adn the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel."
Genesis 3:15
This puts a whole new meaning to the verse that says,
"You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good."
Genesis 50:20
We participate in communion to remember that God loves us so much that He gave His Son to save us all!! I weep because I can recall all the ways His precious blood changed my life and made me whole again! Without communion and without the cross we would be lost. That is why the saints weep during communion. It isn’t some religious practice but it is a physical representation of recalling just where the Lord brought us from. We were retched and rebellious and the cross drew us back to HIM! Thank you Lord!
We are only here today because of the Jesus and the price He paid on Calvary.
The best part is that communion can be taken anywhere!
During covid, I made my family communion bread so that anytime we wanted to remember the sacrifice we could! It doesn’t have to just be Easter! Communion can be taken year round! Whenever you need a refreshing of Him, you can take communion right at home. His presence will fall on you strong! Here is a recipe for communion bread!
