
My husband and I recently had our very first bonfire with our siblings and friends! It was the best Monday night ever! As I hovered behind watching everyone, I marveled at how much the Lord has blessed my husband and I. We have family that love coming over and a beautiful home to host. There has been, on multiple occasions, guests that have commented on how peaceful our home feels. As a Christian wife I have prayed that our home would cultivate that sort of atmosphere not only for my husband and I to come home to after a long day at work, but also for our guests that visit. Here are some ways that we have intentionally made sure that the aroma of our home is peace.
Invite the Holy Spirit In
- Friend, pray over your home!
- Let prayer set the tone for your home!
- No matter what is happening out in the “real world” our home is always Heaven on Earth
- The peace that others feel is the presence of the Lord
- You can have all the candles lit, the most amazing dinner on the table, and a heart ready to serve but if the Lord’s presence is not there, none of it matters!
- Invite the spirit in to STAY not to visit
- The presence of the Lord is not subject to a certain place, like the 4 walls of the Church-invite the presence of the Lord into your home that you, and your guests, may dwell in it
Psalm 27:4 says,
"One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in His temple."
Host with Humility
- It is so important to have a servants heart when guests are over. No matter if it is a friend or you mom, serve with your heart. Have a snack and beverage ready for them. Whatever is yours is now theirs. When we open our home to host we get so excited because this is our chance to love people like Christ loves us. To serve them like Christ served when He walked this Earth. The goal is to make your guests feel like they are the most important thing and have your full attention
- Put down your phones, turn on worship music, and serve with humility
Philippians 2:1-4 says,
"So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, and affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus."
Filter What Comes In and What Comes Out
- I can’t emphasis how important it is to pray, pray, pray, and pray some more over your home
- You control what comes in and what comes out
- If you and your husband are bickering all time, pray that spirit away
- If you are having bad dreams, pray that spirit away
- Pay attention to what you watch and listen to in your home
- You control what spirits are welcomed in and what to cast away!
- This includes people, yes, love people because the Lord commands, but we can’t let anyone and everyone into our home since we don’t know what they are carrying in
- Be vigilant and pray for discernment
1 Peter 5:6-8 says,
"Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be alert and sober minded. Your enemy the devil prowls like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."
Ephesians 6:12 says,
"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against wickedness in high places."
Cultivate the Spirit of Gratitude
- Whatever you feel about your home is what will come out when guests arrive
- Are you grateful? Or do you no care about your home?
- When we have the spirit of gratitude towards our home, we are more likely to take great care of it
- When we are grateful the Lord blesses that and makes our home bountiful with resources, food, protection, provision, and HIS PRESENCE
- Maybe this isn’t your dream home, maybe you need more space, or to get out of this particular neighborhood, TRY GRATITUDE
- Gratitude will change you perspective and your outlook on things. It’ll make your home become inviting
Philippians 4:11-13 says,
"I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all things through him who gives me strength."
Maintain a Clean Home
- This is so important
- I know the dishes get piled up and laundry gets out of control, it’s just me and my husband and this happens all the time
- Every time we have guests we disinfect/clean the whole house and plump up the pillows. Why? Because it matters!
- The bible says that everything that we do, we must do unto the glory of the Lord
- Maintain a clean home, but if everything isn’t perfect THAT IS OKAY!
- I still don’t have the house properly decorated but like my mom once told me, “Your house is lived in and loved on.”
- Clean and organized not perfect
Colossians 3:23-24 says,
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord you are serving."
